Overview

MailerLite is a great alternative to the widely popular Email Service Provider (ESP), Mailchimp. While some still prefer Mailchimp’s fun, monkey-themed interface, MailerLite is quickly becoming a well-loved contender which might soon overthrow the giant. MailerLite scores higher than Mailchimp on a few features which might be important to you. These include a visual automation workflow tool, the ability to manage groups and segments, auto-resends, and customer support. From an overall visual standpoint, some say that the email campaigns created in MailerLite are more appealing. I’d say you be the judge – both have sample galleries (see links in the Benefits You Might Love section).

Who Is MailerLite Good For?

MailerLite is great for a starting business with a small subscriber base. Their interface is simple to use and comes with many features. As most of their configurations are easy to learn, this is an ideal starter tool for beginners who are new to email marketing. You should consider MailerLite if your requirements match the following: you want to start with a free service, your customer base is extremely small, your workflow automations don’t require page tracking, and you want to manage your subscribers through segments and not separate lists. Another highlight of MailerLite is the ability to get email and chat support with all plans including free membership, which requires no credit card at the time of signup.

Areas For Improvement

Advanced Behavioral Targeting
MailerLite does simple automations really well, but cannot handle advanced automations such as tracking pages visited and triggering events based on those pages.

Approval Process
We have seen a few strong complaints on the lack of transparency about what the approval process really entails with MailerLite. You do have to have a complete website and working email set up before they will approve you to use their services. Although the vetting process is heavily regulated for good reason (to prevent spammers from using the MailerLite platform), this could be explained in a clearer manner to avoid the frustration that comes with being denied.

Helpful Negative & Positive Customer Feedback

Helpful Negative Review

” We tried switching from Constant Contact to this company with nothing but issues. We’ve never had an issue with CC but wanted to give these guys a try since they are less expensive. DO NOT make this same mistake. They don’t have as good of servers and after 1 week of terrible service, they wouldn’t issue us a credit for the amount of time we couldn’t use due to their low delivery rates. I’m not trying to get something for free but when I get sold by them on their ability to deliver and they don’t I would expect some kind of refund. I would not recommend using this company.”

Helpful Positive Review

“Pros: It’s very easy to create forms, subscriber lists, and automation sequences. Also, unlike some other email platforms, is that one subscriber is counted as only one subscriber, regardless of how many lists he may belong to. Other platforms count the same person as a separate subscriber for each separate list they belong to. And of course I love that it’s free for the first 1000 people on your list. This is a real plus for new businesses who are just starting out and don’t have an income stream yet.

Cons: You can’t customize your forms as granularly as I’d like to. For example, you can’t upload your own fonts and the available fonts are limited. Also you can’t add custom CSS to your pages.

Overall: I’m saving per year over my old email marketing software, and I get the same if not more functionality.”

The Scoop

With customer sentiments such as, “I switched to MailerLite and have never been happier”, we put our stamp of approval behind MailerLite as a verified, customer-pleasing product. There are much more sophisticated products out there (which come with steep price tags) for people with specific needs, like integration to massive CRMs such as SalesForce, or those who need highly e-commerce-centric workflows. However, this is the ideal product for a company who is just starting out and needs to build up their subscriber base as well as gain a solid understanding of how email marketing works.

In conclusion, we believe that MailerLite is a very noteworthy competitor in the ESP space. They make marketing really, really, easy to do – at free or low prices. While they are missing the fun and gimmicky appeal of other applications such as Mailchimp, some of their features are better evolved, like their visual automations. Most people who have switched from Mailchimp to MailerLite are happy with the prices and functionality, although some have complained that their template selection is a bit sparse. Another annoyance is the strict approval process which some feel is excessive. Since starting membership is free, there is no harm in test driving this platform and seeing what it can do if you are interested.
